Liberia Tourism, West Africa - Unravel Travel TV
Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Cote d'Ivoire to its east...
Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Cote d'Ivoire to its east. It covers an area of 111,369 km sq and is home to about 3.7 million people.
Liberia is a country with historical ties to the United States. It was founded by freed black slaves during the pre-Civil War antebellum era of the nineteenth century. The capital, Monrovia, was named after James Monroe. Liberia's flag closely resembles the American flag, reflecting the historical ties of Liberia to the United States.
History
Anthropological research shows the region of Liberia was inhabited at least as far back as the 12th century, perhaps earlier. Between 1461 and the late 17th century, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders had contacts and trading posts in Liberia. The Portuguese had named the area Costa da Pimenta, later translated as Grain Coast, because of the abundance of grains of melegueta pepper.
In 1822, the American Colonization Society which was the primary vehicle for returning black Americans to greater freedom in Africa, established Liberia as a place to send people who were formerly enslaved. This movement of black people by the A.C.S. had broad support nationwide among white people in America. While the institution of slavery in America grew, reaching almost four million slaves by the mid 1800s, a growing population in the U.S. chose to emigrate to Liberia as well. African-Americans gradually migrated to the colony and became known as Americo-Liberians, from whom many present day Liberians trace their ancestry. On July 26, 1847, Americo-Liberian settlers declared independence of the Republic of Liberia.
Liberia retained its independence during the Scramble for Africa, but lost its claim to extensive territories that were annexed by Britain and France. Economic development was hindered by the decline of markets for Liberian goods in the late 19th century and by indebtedness on a series of loans, payments on which drained the economy.
On April 12, 1980, a successful military coup was staged by a group of noncommissioned army officers led by Master Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe. The soldiers were a mixture of the various ethnic groups that claimed marginalization at the hands of the minority Americo-Liberian settlers. In late 1989, the First Liberian Civil War began and the country was in state of war to varying degrees until 2003. Liberia is recovering from a devastating civil war that ended with a ceasefire in August 2003.
While the country is now on the mend, it has not yet redeveloped the necessary infrastructure to sustain a large increase in tourism, with little for the average visitor outside Monrovia. Towns like Buchanan, Ganta etc are little more than a collection of shanty houses with no decent hotels or food. Monrovia in general is calmer than the more far-flung areas although the situation countrywide is improving with the presence of UN Peacekeepers. Fear should not stop you enjoying your visit but act with caution. Travel outside Monrovia is very difficult and not advisable on your own.
Climate
The equatorial climate is hot year-round with heavy rainfall from May to October with a short interlude in mid-July to August. During the winter months of November to March dry dust-laden harmattan winds blow inland causing many problems for residents.

The history of the Dominican Republic is the result of an unlikely mixture of influences; nowhere else will you find a blending of European, African, and native Taíno Indian cultures. These distinct cultures still drive the social identity of the people today. Every aspect of their food, music, art, sports and religion provides a unique insight into the development of their country. In a single day you can experience both ancient and modern cultures from around the globe. Nowhere is this more evident than in their food. As a former Spanish Colony, many of its dishes carry a familiar Latin American feel. Lots of rice, beans, meat and seafood can be found in their cuisine. However, strong influences from its heritage give the meals a unique twist. Traditional Taíno dishes are still made featuring yucca, plantains, and potatoes; as well as African recipes using similar native ingredients. The most common food on the Island is called La Bandera, or "The Flag." It is made with meat, rice, and red beans. Making the dish distinctly Dominican, many will also serve it with friend plantains called "tostones." As a culture that loves to eat, the meal will often continue beyond this first course. Be prepared to try boiled green plantain known as "mangú," "pasteles en hojas," which are wrapped turnovers cooked in banana leaves; and various casseroles, stews, and meat dishes featuring braised goat, pork and chicken rinds.
In addition to their rich culinary history, Dominicans also demonstrate their unmistakable heritage through art. The island is filled with many different types of bright and colorful artwork. Jewelry made out of amber, bone, horn and coconut husk can be found at local markets and shops, where the native Taíno influence can still be seen. In addition to jewelry, Dominican artists also use clay, porcelain, hemp, and guano to make both decorative and religious figurines. Many of these figurines point to the religious history of the island. Its inhabitants are mostly Catholic, followed by other denominations of Christianity.
Although food and art are important parts of Dominican culture, the true life of the culture is baseball. Much more than a national pastime, baseball is a major source of national pride and identity. In fact, almost 40 percent of players in the U.S. Major League Baseball and minor leagues come from Latin America- with most of those coming from the Dominican Republic. Some of their most famous Dominican players include Pedro Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols and Sammy Sosa.
As the first city founded in the Americas, the Dominican Republic's capital city of Santo Domingo boasts an incredible collection of museums, historic sites, art and music. The Colonial City, located inside Santo Domingo, is the first city of the America's; it features the first street, hospital, university and cathedral in the Americas. It is believed that the body of Christopher Columbus still resides on this island that he landed on hundreds of years ago. There are many historic museums and buildings that take a unique look into Dominican culture. Among them are the Alcázar de Colon (Fortress of Colon), the Reloj de Sol (the Sun Clock) and the monasterio de los Padres Dominicos (the Monastery of the Dominican Fathers).
Much of the Dominican culture can be experienced through its inspiring museums, food, and music. However, to truly understand the depth of the Dominican People, you must experience Carnival. This annual celebration of independence spans the entire country, with each city putting on their own unique version of the festival. They fill the streets with colorful masks, music, and of course, dancing. However, Carnival didn't always look this way. It is actually the culmination of all three cultures; native Taíno, Spanish and African. Brought together, they create a swirl of energy and culture that you can't find anywhere else. Carnival lasts throughout the month of February. Other Dominican Holidays include January 26th, the day of the patriarch Juan Pablo Duarte; March 9, the day of the patriarch Francisco del Rosario Sánchez; August 16, the Restoration of the Republic; and Constitution Day on November 6.

Announcing the "Hoverboard," a personal electric vehicle to be launched on Kickstarter September 17, 2015 and culminating October 21, 2015, the day Marty McFly, in Back to the Future II, traveled into the future to discover the Hoverboard. The Hoverboard is as much a "board sport" as it is a tech gadget. Serial Entrepreneur and Inventor, Robert Bigler explains, "I dreamt of a personal electric vehicle that would produce the sensation of surfing on land."
The Hoverboard is targeting the higher-end consumer market. Bigler explains, "I didn't want to approach the first real Hoverboard from the standpoint of making it a price-product. I spared no expense to make it fully, everything today's technology could possibly provide."
The Hoverboard has a single, electrically motorized, 10" diameter wheel in the center of its deck. The narrow wheel is computer-controlled and driven by as much as 5,000 watts of power to keep the rider balanced while also producing acceleration on demand. Leaning forward causes the Hoverboard to accelerate, and leaning back causes it to decelerate, or go the other direction. There are no controls to hold in your hand. While the computer and power electronics automatically keep the Hoverboard under the rider front-to-back, the riders themselves develop the skill to balance side to side, maneuver and ultimately "carve." The experience evolves from hovering, to fully surfing on land.
Specifications:
- Range: 12 Miles with the Standard Battery, over 20 Miles with Extended Battery
- Weight: 25 Pounds
- Charging Time: 16 Minutes with Supercharger or 1 hour with standard charger
- Top Speed: 20 mph
The Hoverboard is equipped with onboard lighting, speakers to play music, ground-detecting sonar to keep the Hoverboard parallel to the changing ground, and LCD displays for active parameter monitoring while riding.
Modular and Serviceable; When designing the Hoverboard, Mr. Bigler remembered simpler times, when people were empowered with the ability to work on their own cars, not just to maintain them, but also to customize and improve them. He wanted to bring this empowerment back and so made the Hoverboard OPEN. Tool-handy owners are not only allowed to open their Hoverboards - they are encouraged to do so. The majority of service and even repair tasks can be conducted by the owners themselves. This also means that the Hoverboard can be User-Upgraded. Most often, the first to purchase tech products have to then watch a rapid succession of improvements to the design quickly render their investment obsolete. With the Hoverboard, such improved modules can be purchased and installed to keep the original investment always fully current.
User Programmable: To absolutely maximize an owner's personal connection to the Hoverboard, it has also been made User-Programmable by way of a simple programming language called Hoverscript. An extension of BASIC, Hoverscript is easily learned by people with no previous programming experience. This programmability eliminates all boundaries to the owner's ability to completely personalize their own Hoverboard.
The Kickstarter campaign will reward the first to order with the lowest prices and the earliest delivery times - FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED, starting Sept. 17th 2015.

Ben Fogle travels to The Azores to explore the islands and takes on different challenges in each. On Faial he hikes along trails on a lunar landscape as well as along crater rims and finds out how volcanos have changes the island and the lives of its people. In the harbour town of Horta Ben displays his artistic abilities to leave his own landmark before a ferry ride to Pico where he climbs the highest mountain in Portugal to enjoy breathtaking views. On the island he also visits the vineyards growing among the lava stones and the underground lava tunnels. The island of St Jorges is ideal for more extreme adventure and here Ben's skills in coasteering, canyoning and abseiling along this rugged terrain are tested. Finally, Ben travels to the largest island, San Miguel and to the historic centre of Ponta Delgada to discover the island's rich heritage and culture. He travels to the most popular attraction on the island, Furnas and its spectacular geological feature of bubbling water and steaming vents and it's here where he cooks his own geo-thermal meal. Closeby, he takes a dip in the thermal lake which is renowned for its healing properties. The Lakes of Sete Cidades are examples of the dramatic scenery which form the backdrop to his journey and especially while he kayaks in one of the crater lakes and jumps onto a mountain bike to seek adventure further afield.

Eurostar expand their services into Europe with the unveiling of new state-of-the-art e320 trains. In the last two decades Eurostar has revolutionised cross-channel travel, providing a swift, seamless link between the UK and mainland Europe. With passengers increasingly choosing high speed rail over plane for short haul travel and demand at an all-time high, the business is now set for further expansion of its services into Europe.
For the 20th anniversary Eurostar unveiled in public for the first time its new state-of-the-art e320 train scheduled to enter commercial service at the end of 2015. At the same time the company announced its decision to augment its fleet with a further 7 new e320 trains. With the original order of 10 e320s now in the final stage of completion, this increases the number of new trains to 17 in total.
The introduction of the e320 represents a major advance for international high speed rail. Built to a bespoke specification these trains are ‘inter-operable’ with the ability to operate across diverse European signalling systems, opening up the potential for a whole range of new direct services between the UK and European city centre destinations.
Carrying 900 passengers, the e320 boosts capacity per train by 20% and is capable of reaching a speed of 320 kph (200 mph). With the external livery and interiors designed by Pininfarina, the legendary Italian design house, world-renowned for its iconic car designs, the new Eurostar train boasts many innovative features aimed at maximising energy efficiency and delivering an enhanced experience for travellers. Recognising the importance of connectivity for passengers, going forward, the Eurostar fleet will be equipped with free wifi throughout the train, allowing customers to email, chat and tweet during their journey. The new wifi portal will provide a range of information and entertainment including live news feeds and weather reports as well as a collection of destination guides. With the introduction of the e320, customers will enjoy more space per seat with each seat equipped with power points and a USB socket. Business passengers will experience the ultimate in on-board comfort with a carefully designed environment aimed at maximising productivity whilst offering a relaxing space. For leisure customers the e320 will represent a considerable upgrade with a newly designed bar buffet, ergonomically designed reclining seats and increased luggage areas. Beyond its core routes of Paris, Brussels and Lille, Eurostar serves a range of destinations including the French Alps, Swiss Alps and Geneva. May 2015 will see the start of a new year-round direct service to Provence, stopping at Lyon, Avignon and Marseille, followed at the end of 2016 by the launch of a direct route to Amsterdam with stops in Antwerp, Rotterdam and Schiphol along the way.

Ryanair's TV ad called 'History' is a look back at travel with Ryanair in 1985 compared to 2015.
Ryanair is Europe’s favourite airline, operating more than 1,600 daily flights from 72 bases, connecting 189 destinations in 30 countries and operating a fleet of more than 300 new Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Ryanair has recently announced firm orders for a further 280 new Boeing 737 aircraft, as well as options for 100 more Boeing 737 MAX 200s, which will enable Ryanair to lower fares and grow traffic from 90m this year to over 150m p.a. in 2024. Ryanair currently has a team of more than 9,500 highly skilled aviation professionals, and has an industry leading 30-year safety record.
Here is a brief history of Europe's first and largest low fares airline:
1985: Ryanair is set up by the Ryan family with a share capital of just £1, and a staff of 25. They launch their first route in July 1985 with daily flights on a 15-seater Bandeirante aircraft, operating daily from Waterford in the southeast of Ireland to London Gatwick. Ryanair's first cabin crew recruits must be less than 5ft. 2ins. tall in order to be able to operate in the tiny cabin of the aircraft. Passengers: 5,000 People (y/e): 51
1986: Ryanair obtains permission from the regulatory authorities to challenge the British Airways and Aer Lingus' high fare duopoly on the Dublin-London route. Services are launched with two (46-seater) turbo prop BAE748 aircraft. The first flights operate in May from Dublin to London Luton. The launch fare of £99 return is less than half the price of the BA/Aer Lingus lowest return fare of £209. Both British Airways and Aer Lingus slash their high prices in response to Ryanair's. Ryanair starts the first fare war in Europe. With two routes in operation, Ryanair carries 82,000 passengers in its first full year in operation. Passengers: 82,000 People (y/e): 151
1987: Ryanair acquires its first jet aircraft by leasing three BAC1-11 aircraft from the Romanian state airline, Tarom. The aircraft arrive on a full wet lease with Tarom providing all the pilots and engineers to enable Ryanair to operate the aircraft. With the arrival of these jet aircraft Ryanair increases its network with 15 scheduled routes from Dublin to Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Cardiff, and opens up new routes from Luton to Cork, Shannon, Galway, Waterford and Knock in the West of Ireland. Passengers: 322,000 People (y/e): 212
1988: Ryanair leases another three BAC 1-11 jets (6 in total) from Tarom, and leases a brand new ATR 42 turbo prop aircraft from GPA to service the smaller Irish regional airports. Ryanair launch two new routes from Dublin to Brussels (Mon-Fri) and a once weekly to Munich. Ryanair launches a business class service and a Frequent Flyer Club, neither of which prove particularly successful. Passengers: 592,000 People (y/e): 379
1989: Ryanair lease two more ATR42 turbo props (3 in total) and use these aircraft to retire the small Bandeirantes and the old 748's. The fleet now comprises 6 x BAC1-11 jets and 3 x ATR42 turbo props. Due to continuing losses the business class product is abandoned and the Frequent Flyer Club closed. Passengers: 644,000 People (y/e): 477
1990: After three years of rapid growth in aircraft, routes and intense price competition with Aer Lingus and British Airways, Ryanair accumulates £20m in losses and goes through a substantial restructuring. The Ryan family invest a further £20m. in the company, and copying the Southwest Airlines low fares model the airline is re-launched under new management as Europe's first low fares airline. Ryanair now offers the lowest fares in every market, high frequency flights, moving to a single aircraft fleet type, scrapping free drinks and expensive meals on board but reducing the lowest fares from £99 to just £59 return. Ryanair launch an Easter weekend seat sale with fares of £59 return, and such is the demand that passengers queue halfway up Dawson Street for 3 days to get these lowest ever fares. Passengers: 745,000 People (y/e): 493

Las Vegas launches the latest “What Happens Here, Stays Here” commercial (8 December 2014), titled “Transformation.” The 30-second spot makes its debut, along with a series of digital and social extensions. For more than 10 years, the iconic campaign has celebrated adult freedom, and “Transformation” illustrates the clandestine freedom people experience in Las Vegas while instilling the destination’s message of: be yourself or anyone else.
The narrative follows the journey of lead male and female characters as they spend the day crossing paths with their appearances evolving at each location. The lead characters come together at the end of the commercial as Imagine Dragons performs their latest single, “I Bet My Life.” The destination was eager to work with the Las Vegas quartet on the pop-culture entrenched campaign as it continues to elevate Las Vegas as the “Entertainment Capital of the World.”
“We were incredibly excited to partner with Las Vegas on this campaign,” said Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons. “Las Vegas is our home and our band will always be grateful for the support the city has given us over the years.”
In the current campaign, Las Vegas celebrates the over-the-top experiences and activities that can be found throughout the city, and make Las Vegas unlike any other destination in the world. “Transformation” was directed by Jamie Rafn, whose previous credits include work for Visa and T-Mobile.
“Transformation puts a spotlight on the autonomy Las Vegas offers visitors to be who they want to be,” said Cathy Tull, senior vice president of marketing for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). “For Las Vegas, working with Imagine Dragons, a band our city has watched flourish, was an unforgettable experience.”
To extend the “Transformation” reach, Las Vegas partnered with content creator and digital influencer Meagan Cignoli to produce custom ‘transformation’ videos. Cignoli, an industry leader named as one of the “Top 10 Stop-Motion Artists on Vine” by Adweek, has also created content for brands including: Coca-Cola, Tiffany & Co., Mercedes Benz and Samsung. The videos will be shared on Las Vegas’ official Instagram, Vine, Facebook and Twitter accounts.
To further extend this effort, Las Vegas will partner with YouTube influencers to create tutorials for consumers to learn how to create their own ‘Transformation look,’ which will be shared out in the New Year. Pinterest will also be a key platform where Las Vegas will provide female consumers tips and tricks for trendy looks to allow them to experience the destination in style. The widely popular “What Happens Here, Stays Here” campaign embraces adult freedom and positions Las Vegas as an unassuming and welcoming destination. Every year, millions of visitors seek sanctuary in Las Vegas as the place where everyone is able to be who they want to be. In 2014, Las Vegas is expected to welcome more than 40 million visitors, a record high for the destination.

Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan. It is located on the Ishim River in the north portion of Kazakhstan, within Akmola Province, though administrated separately from the province as a federal city area. It is the second-largest city in Kazakhstan. Founded in 1830 as Akmolinsk and renamed as Tselinograd in 1961, the city has evolved into a cultural and administrative centre of Virgin Lands Campaign. In 1992, it was renamed as Akmola, the original name meaning "white holy place" or "white abundance". On 10 December 1997, Akmola became the capital of Kazakhstan. On 6 May 1998, it received the name of Astana, which means "the capital" in Kazakh. Since becoming the capital, Astana has undergone tremendous growth. It is home to many futuristic buildings, hotels and skyscrapers. In addition to serving as government headquarters, Astana is center for industry, sports, healthcare and education. Astana International Airport was designed by late-Japanese architect, Kisho Kurokawa. The Astana Metro is a planned underground construction in Astana.
Astana Railway Station is an important hub for northern Kazakhstan, served by Qazaqstan Temir Zholy trains to most major cities in Kazakhstan, including Talgo expresses to Almaty. International trains leave for Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. There is also a direct train to Urumqi in China's Xinjiang.
Astana, Kazakhstan is the host venue for EXPO-2017, which will focus on the theme "Future Energy". The theme is aimed to concentrate on both the future of energy, but also on innovative, but practical energy solutions, and their global impact. EXPO-2017 will be the first time that a major international exhibition of this kind is coming to a country from the former Soviet Union. More than 100 countries and 10 international organizations are expected to participate. Around 2-3 million people are expected to visit the international pavilions from June to September 2017. 25 hectares is planned for the pavilions of Expo 2017. The site has a convenient access to Astana’s city center, the international airport and the railway station. The Expo Site is also linked with a network of Kazakhstan’s inter-city roads to ensure a quick access from all the country. Construction of the pavilions will begin April 2014 with 20 companies from Kazakhstan and 49 companies from around the globe. Currently, designs are being considered for the grounds of Expo 2017 from architects in the UK, USA, Germany, Austria, Netherlands and China. On April 24, 2014 the President of Kazakhstan Nurusltan Nazarbayev took part in a capsule-laying ceremony of the Astana EXPO-2017 Exhibition center construction in Astana, which will be located near the Nazarbayev University.

NATO warships have lined up to within just a few hundred feet of each other and taken part in a complicated group exercise for Exercise Trident Juncture 15. The tricky feat was captured by Royal Navy photographers as part of Officer of the Watch Manoeuvres – a difficult task that tests ship communication systems, as well as command and control systems between vessels. In total 18 warships, from 11 nations, took part in the series of complex manoeuvres which covered hundred of miles of the Western Mediterranean over several hours.
Two British warships took part in the serial, Her Majesty's Ships Ocean and Bulwark, with Ocean's Navigating Officer coordinating the whole exercise. Navigating Officer Lieutenant Commander George Storton, from Bosham, West Sussex, said: "Modern warships are packed full of technology but underneath all of that we still need to recognise the basic mariner principles. Learning practical seamanship is vitally important, as this exercise demonstrated, but it's also great fun!"
Exercise Trident Juncture is the largest NATO exercise in over a decade involving 36,000 personnel and 60 warships from 30 nations. It is one of a series of long-planned exercises to ensure that NATO Allies are ready to deal with any emerging crisis, from any direction, and that they are able to work effectively with partners in tackling any crisis.
Commanding the Officer of the Watch manoeuvres was Rear Admiral Tony Radakin, Commander of the UK Maritime Forces, but also the senior officer in charge of NATO's Maritime Forces for Exercise Trident Juncture and throughout the whole of 2016 when the UK takes charge of the NATO Response Force. Based in the Royal Navy's flagship HMS Ocean, Adm Radakin said: "It's a rare privilege to command and train alongside such a formidable line up of warships, from so many of our allies. It feels 'real' - training in purely national lines is comfortable but in reality navies operate as international coalitions, with a multiplicity of accents and perspectives reflecting the NATO's allies commitment to each other.
"Exercises such as Trident Juncture enable us to build trust in each other and our capabilities and the manoeuvres this morning demonstrate that we can work seamlessly together." Trident Juncture started at the beginning of October 2015 with a virtual, "table top" scenario and has now moved to the "Live" phase looking at how situations would be dealt with in the real world. For the 60 NATO warships, this has meant a series of amphibious raids, anti-submarine drills and air defence exercises against Typhoon Eurofighters. The next phase of the exercise is "Theatre Entry" when the ships drop troops ashore in order to bring order back to a fictional country – this phase takes place in Spain and Portugal at the start of November 2015.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is pleased to present Making Africa – A Continent of Contemporary Design, an exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Vitra Design Museum, in collaboration with the German Federal Culture Foundation and the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne. The show exhibits work from a diverse range of creative fields: object and furniture design graphic arts, illustration, fashion, architecture, urban planning, craft, film, photography, as well as digital and analogue approaches; these works demonstrate the political, economic, social, cultural, and technological transformation of the continent. This evolution, especially evident in Africa, is led by a new generation of thinkers and makers, who propose multidisciplinary, innovative solutions for the continent and the world, simultaneously revolutionizing our traditional understanding of design. The works in the exhibition provide concrete answers to the question of what twenty-first century design can and should achieve. These pieces are often created in small quantities by a collective of individuals; they are typically produced de-centrally, in an urban context, and are more oriented to the process than the result. They often emerge from the informal maker culture, in which something existing is reworked or new work is produced with traditional and electronic tools. The works establish connections between the digital revolution and our analogue existence, radically rethink materials, concentrate on society rather than the market, and make bold statements about the future.

Both born within the 19th Century, Louis Vuitton and William Webb Ellis became pioneers within their fields by individually pushing the boundaries in their fields of expertise, which is what enabled their legacies to live on today. Delving deep into the histories of both men, it is clear that both innovators shared many similarities; the predominant parallel being their impact and role in shaping the cultural and artistic landscape to be as we know it today.
Whilst attending Rugby School, Webb Ellis is reported to have picked up and run with the ball in his arms during a football match, which is seen as the beginning of the game we today call Rugby. His name now adorns the Trophy presented to the winner of each Rugby World Cup Tournament. At a tender age of 16, Louis Vuitton turned his family residence into the cradle of the company, where the Asnières site has been the symbol of the Vuitton family's personal and commercial success since 1859.
Two centuries on, we celebrate the union cemented between the sport and Louis Vuitton in developing the travel case for the Webb Ellis Cup; a collaboration that both pioneers would have been more than proud of.

There's a lot of symbolism in One World Trade Center. Standing at an iconic 1776 feet tall, it's said to be the strongest building in the world; earthquake, storm and attack-resistant. A symbol of hope and the enduring strength of a city that was knocked down and got up again. On the Walks Of New York small group World Trade Center tour you'll travel with a local tour guide for a more personal take on the sites and events that unfolded here. You'll hear harrowing personal stories of tragedy and loss on September 11th; visit the most important sites to pay tribute to victims and firefighters; see the Survivor's Tree to learn of New York's battle to rebuild; and finish on a high with a visit to One World Observatory.
Your tour starts at St. Paul's Chapel; familiar to most from the footage and videos beamed around the world after the 9/11 terror attacks. This is where families and friends gathered to pray for their loved ones, support each other and await news from the wreckage.
Your first visit sets a more personal tone for your World Trade Center tour. Together with your small group and guide you'll move on to the American Express Eleven Tears Memorial to hear stories of the eleven colleagues who perished here, and to the stunning Winter Gardens rebuilt now even more beautiful than ever.
Speaking of beautiful, the two reflecting pools built in the footprint of the towers are a sight to behold. Lined with the names of every victim of the attacks, they're a striking reminder of the scale of the tragedy, while roses (a single rose is placed on the name of every victim on the day of their birthday) humanize the great memorial.
Your guide will lead you around the World Trade Center Memorial adding a more personal side to the sites as you pass them. Visit the Fireman's Memorial to learn of the heroic men and women who worked around the clock; many of them sacrificing themselves to save hundreds of lives. At the Survivor Tree you'll hear how after surviving the attack, the tree was weaned back to health by New Yorkers, becoming a symbol for their own recovery and resilience.
For many visitors the 9/11 Memorial is a daunting visit; the size and gravity so momentous that the reality is almost unfathomable. Traveling with an expert local tour guide in small groups, your experience will be more personal and insightful. Through their stories and anecdotes your guide will help you come to terms with the sites you visit, pointing out details and taking you to sites you may not have visited on your own.
End on a high with a visit to the One World Observatory which offers not just a breathtaking 360-degree view over NYC; but a full 360-degree experience too; with video commentary about the builders who created the tower and details of the structure itself.
With pre-reserved entrance, your visit is guaranteed, regardless of the crowds. Enter One World Trade Center and hop onboard one of the "Sky Pods" - incredible elevators that shoot from the first floor to 102nd in just 43 seconds. As you ascend the pods light up with LED technology, animating the changing skyline of New York from the 1600s to present day, and the program even changes depending on the time of day you visit.
Having explored the tragedy and loss of 9/11 at ground level, you'll end your tour on a high. Step out of the Sky Pod and into a circular room with floor to ceiling windows for the most spectacular 360-degree views New York has ever seen. Enjoy an independent visit at your leisure, staying for as long as you like to soak up the views.

Alan Kaufman is the owner of a gourmet Pickle Store on the Lower East Side, New York. As far back as 1910 there have always been numerous pickle stores on Essex Street. Today The Pickle Guys are the only pickle store that exists on Essex Street. Alan makes his pickles from an old Eastern European recipe “Just the way mom use to make them”. The pickles are made by letting them sit in salt brine with garlic, spices, and no preservatives. Storing them in barrels, from a day up to six months, the pickles cure as they sit. Along with pickles The Pickle Guys brought back old traditional items such as Pickled Watermelon & Russell Borscht. Over the years The Pickle Guys also added new items including Pickled Turnips and Pickled Pineapples. Two weeks before Passover The Pickle Guys bring our operation outside and grind Horseradish from freshly peeled roots.
The pickling industry has changed from vendors with push carts to merchants in little stores and, finally, factories that manufacture pickles. The way The Pickle Guys make these products is just like the old days. The Pickle Guys run a clean operation that is customer friendly and invite you to come on down and take a look and see for yourself.
The Pickle Guys operate under the Rabbinical Supervision of RABBI SHMUEL FISHELI

Broadway celebrity drawings at Sardi's Restaurant - Walks Of New York - Unravel Travel TV

The exclusive Walks Of New York tour takes you on an exploration of the history, stars and stories of Broadway, with special access at the New Amsterdam Theatre home to the Disney Theatrical Group and legendary shows like Aladdin and The Lion King.
During the Walks Of New York tour you will visit Sardi's Restaurant to see some of the hundreds of caricatures of show-business celebrities that adorn its walls. Melchiore Pio Vincenzo "Vincent" Sardi, Sr. and his wife Eugenia Pallera opened their first eatery, The Little Restaurant, at 146 West 44th Street in 1921. When that building was slated for demolition in 1926, they accepted an offer from the theater magnates, the Shubert brothers, to relocate to a new building the brothers were erecting down the block. The new restaurant, Sardi's, opened March 5, 1927. When business slowed after the move, Vincent Sardi sought a gimmick to attract customers. Recalling the movie star caricatures that decorated the walls of Joe Zelli’s, a Parisian restaurant and jazz club, Sardi decided to recreate that effect in his establishment. He hired a Russian refugee named Alex Gard to draw Broadway celebrities. Sardi and Gard drew up a contract that stated Gard would make the caricatures in exchange for one meal per day at the restaurant. The first official caricature by Gard was of Ted Healy, the vaudevillian of Three Stooges fame. When Sardi’s son, Vincent Sardi, Jr. took over restaurant operations in 1947, he offered to change the terms of Gard's agreement. Gard refused and continued to draw the caricatures in exchange for meals until his death.
With the Walks Of New York friendly team of 'Broadway Insiders', you’ll tour all the top sights of the theatre district. Visit iconic Times Square to learn of its unlikely history; hear how Sardi’s restaurant amassed its impressive collection of famous characters (and a Tony Award to boot); and hear the histories of top stages like Shubert Theatre, where Barbara Streisand entered as an unknown and left as a star. Your guide will teach you what daily life is like for the actors, directors and crew that work around the clock to make Broadway shows a reality - so that you’re well prepped for the highlight of our Broadway tour: A special access visit to the New Amsterdam Theatre. For one full hour you’ll have the run of Disney's New Amsterdam Theatre. Here you’ll be joined by the theatre’s own historian (and his set of keys). Together you’ll explore the theatre; seeing its beautiful stage outside of show time and hearing details of what it takes to stage a show like Aladdin or Mary Poppins; from conception through to closing night (hint: It’s a little more than a spoonful of sugar.) For an extra sprinkle of magic, you’ll visit the Costumes and Props Studio, where you’ll find treasures untold - props and set pieces from past Broadway shows; like the Little Mermaid's giant seashell and Mary Poppins' iconic outfit. Of course the secret to any production’s success is the people behind it. From Florenz Ziegfeld’s pen to Idina Menzel’s voice, Broadway was built on talent - so it’s only fitting that your tour should be too.
Throughout your Walks Of New York, Broadway tour you’ll be accompanied by one of our handpicked Broadway Insiders. Part tour guide, part performer, they come from the ranks of the initiated. Actors, crew, theatre directors; they’ve been there and done that so they’re just the people to give you the inside scoop. Throughout your time together you’ll have an audio headset to ensure that you don’t miss an ounce of their Disney trivia or Broadway gossip. You’ll also hear snippets of audio from live Broadway shows for that extra sprinkle of Disney magic.

"Outbound Africa: Richard Harvey on the Road" takes viewers on a journey to the remote reaches of Ghana, a country on the frontline of climate change.
Louisa Bojesen is on the ground with Richard Harvey, a former power player in London who stepped down as CEO of global insurance giant Aviva. He left the City to travel around Africa's most challenged regions.
Louisa spends a week with him and goes beyond the environmental devastation -- beyond the human poverty -- to explore the business potential in this final frontier of emerging markets.
Richard Harvey was the long-standing CEO of AVIVA, one of the UK's largest FTSE companies, until July 2007. He was responsible for the strategic development of the group -- the world's fifth largest insurer and the biggest in the UK -- and his notable achievements include the successful merger of Norwich Union and CGU in May 2000 to create Aviva.
Richard oversaw the acquisition of RAC in 2005, helped to implement the acquisition of AmerUs which expanded Aviva's U.S. presence four-fold, and started Aviva's work in China and India. His positions held include: Chair of the Association of British Insurers (ABI); member of the CBI's Governing Council and the CBI President's Committee; member of the European Financial Services Roundtable; and member of the Geneva Association.
In 2007, Richard made headlines when he surprised the corporate world and announced his early retirement at the age of 57. Richard traded his chauffeur-driven Lexus and £1.9-million pay package for a four-wheel drive and routine of roughing it as he and his wife Kay embarked on a gap year in Africa. Working with the charity Concern Universal, they travelled to some of Africa's poorest countries: Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and Ghana. They spent their time in the field, experiencing the continent's challenges up close and exploring ways in which business can help.
Upon completing their gap year in 2008, Richard and Kay returned to the UK and continue to volunteer one day per week as advocates for Concern Universal. Richard brings the organisational, financial and communications expertise you would expect from a FTSE chief executive, along with a personal hands-on interest in building and engineering. His main focus at the moment is working to engage international business to invest in Africa and achieve the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs). He believes such investments will pay off in the long run as Africa trades its way out of poverty and markets emerge.
Besides his work with Concern Universal, Richard is also an active speaker at events and is involved in the launch of a healthcare fund through the IFC (part of the World Bank).
Concern Universal:
Based in the UK, CU was established in 1976 and is an international relief and development charity that is committed to a community-led, integrated approach to sustainable development. It was awarded the UK Charity Award for International Development in 2008. CU's mission is to support practical actions that enable people to improve their lives and shape their own futures. CU has over 400 staff and volunteers that work with in-country partners to facilitate development and emergency work that reaches more than 1.5 million people per year in some of the world's poorest countries. Kevin has a new design for a time machine so we visit 3 different eras and when we come back home... the lab is gone!!
➡ About Think's Lab
Think's Lab is a story-based series where I use various Minecraft mods in each episode to create custom mod adventures. It is not a pure Minecraft mod showcase, but I do multiple Minecraft mod spotlights in each video.
Come see my lab full of minions, and join me on an epic Minecraft adventure in every episode! Meet Dave, Kevin (and his obsession with TNT and mischief), Kopi and all the other minions!
My minions are modeled after the minions in Despicable Me, from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, but instead of Gru, the minions have chosen to help me in my lab!
Think's Lab will soon be featured in an upcoming Minecraft parody! It will be a full-length Minecraft song, with high-quality Minecraft animation... Just watch out for Kevin!
